âDo you hear that?â
âHear what?â
âThe silence? I just noticed that the woods are quiet, I canât even hear your heart beating.â Addilyn lifted her head from Michaelâs chest and looked up at him with worried eyes. âSomeoneâs here that shouldnât be.â
Michael linked their fingers and cloaked them in shadows. âNot someone. The creatureâs sense something dangerous.â
âWhy donât we sense it?â
âI donât know.â
Addilyn went against her mates earlier wishes and called out to her daughters.
âThereâs danger here, my loves. Keep close to the Pantar family and donât come into the woods alone.â
âMomma?!â
âMomma, where are you?â
âAre you okay? Is daddy with you?â
âWhy did you lie?â
Addilyn sent them a mental picture of her crossing her arms, tapping her foot and waited for them to stop speaking.
âI am fine⦠we are fine. Promise me youâll do as I ask.â
Addilyn sighed in relief and broke the connection after the girls agreed. Looking up at Michael, she nodded and moved closer, leaning her head against his chest, searching for the beat of his heart. âI still canât hear your heart. How is this possible?â
âI donât know.â
Addilyn stiffened in his arms as the wind blew the smell of fresh blood in their direction. The sound of rustling leaves drew her eyes to the left and the smell grew stronger.
âHelp meâ¦â
Michael tightened his hold on Addilyn and held her still. âNo, stay here, it could be a trap.â
âBut what if itâs not? I have to go help him.â
âJust wait.â
Addilynâs eyes widened in shock when a blood soaked toddler walked around the tree a few yards from them. His black hair appeared to change colors he drew closer and Addilyn realized he was trying to shift. Struggling against Michaels hold, she forced him to release her. âI have to help him.â
Grabbing her hand, he followed her over to the boy and stood guard as she knelt down to meet his eyes.
âHeâs in shock, I think. Heâs looking right through me. I think we should take him to the Queen.â When Michael didnât respond, she looked back to see if he was still there. âWhatâs wrong?â
Waving his hand in a silencing motion, he narrowed his eyes and looked in the direction the child had come from. Taking a cautious step forward, he tilted his head in confusion. âYour Highness?â
The woman stumbled further into view, her face twisted in pain as she looked down at her dangling arm before looking up at Michael. âNicolas, he needs help⦠he needsâ¦. Tréan.â Her words ended on a whisper before she fell to her knees.
âCall Makena, tell her whatâs happening, we need help.â
