“Do you hear that?”

“Hear what?”

“The silence? I just noticed that the woods are quiet, I can’t even hear your heart beating.” Addilyn lifted her head from Michael’s chest and looked up at him with worried eyes. “Someone’s here that shouldn’t be.”

Michael linked their fingers and cloaked them in shadows. ‘Not someone. The creature’s sense something dangerous.’

‘Why don’t we sense it?’

‘I don’t know.’

Addilyn went against her mates earlier wishes and called out to her daughters.

‘There’s danger here, my loves. Keep close to the Pantar family and don’t come into the woods alone.’

‘Momma?!’

‘Momma, where are you?’

‘Are you okay? Is daddy with you?’

‘Why did you lie?’

Addilyn sent them a mental picture of her crossing her arms, tapping her foot and waited for them to stop speaking.

‘I am fine… we are fine. Promise me you’ll do as I ask.’

Addilyn sighed in relief and broke the connection after the girls agreed. Looking up at Michael, she nodded and moved closer, leaning her head against his chest, searching for the beat of his heart. ‘I still can’t hear your heart. How is this possible?’

‘I don’t know.’

Addilyn stiffened in his arms as the wind blew the smell of fresh blood in their direction. The sound of rustling leaves drew her eyes to the left and the smell grew stronger.

‘Help me…’

Michael tightened his hold on Addilyn and held her still. ‘No, stay here, it could be a trap.’

‘But what if it’s not? I have to go help him.’

‘Just wait.’

Addilyn’s eyes widened in shock when a blood soaked toddler walked around the tree a few yards from them. His black hair appeared to change colors he drew closer and Addilyn realized he was trying to shift. Struggling against Michaels hold, she forced him to release her. “I have to help him.”

Grabbing her hand, he followed her over to the boy and stood guard as she knelt down to meet his eyes.

“He’s in shock, I think. He’s looking right through me. I think we should take him to the Queen.” When Michael didn’t respond, she looked back to see if he was still there. “What’s wrong?”

Waving his hand in a silencing motion, he narrowed his eyes and looked in the direction the child had come from. Taking a cautious step forward, he tilted his head in confusion. “Your Highness?”

The woman stumbled further into view, her face twisted in pain as she looked down at her dangling arm before looking up at Michael. “Nicolas, he needs help… he needs…. Tréan.” Her words ended on a whisper before she fell to her knees.

“Call Makena, tell her what’s happening, we need help.”
